Your domain name is your company's address on the net. Keep the following tips in mind while choosing your domain name:
1. Domain name must be between 2-63 characters long
2. Can include only letter , numbers and hypens("-")
3. Choose a domain name that reflects your business AND your products :
People who do not know your domain name may try to guess what it is based on your company and product names.
Choose a domain name which is close to your company name and brand / product name.(eg :www.abccorp.com )
4. Register multiple domain names for your business :
Say your company name is ABC corp. and your product is myproduct. Register domain names for both www.abccorp.com and www.myproduct.com. You can have both of these domain names pointing to different pages of your web site.
This way, customers who only know you by your product name can find you easily by typing in the www.myproduct.com, and those who know you by your corporate name can find you easily by typing www.abccorp.com
Be sure not to point multiple domains at the same page, that may get you dropped from most search engines.
5. Keep your domain name short :
Choose a domain name which is easy to memorize and meaningful. Very long domain names are hard to remember and type. Choose a short domain name but be careful to not abreviate it too much that it becomes unrecognizable.
6. Try to register the .com version of your name first :
When people look for your site on the web, they are likely to first try your company name with the .com suffix. If .com is taken then consider using .net, .org (for noncommercial), .us, info, or .biz.
7. Consider registering other similar names:
To protect your domain name from compititors, consider register other extensions and similar spelling names too.
8. Try including top keyword in your domain name:
Research about what people are likely to searh for in search engines when they look for your product and include those keywords in your domain name.
9. Get domain names with dashes in them :
First reason is asthetic appeal. Longer names with dashes ( - ) are easier to read
Additionally, domain names with dashes sometimes rank a bit higher in the search engines. A higher ranking in the search engines will drive more customers to your web site
Choosing a domain name is an important part of the overall marketing process and should not be taken lightly. Make sure your domain name represents your company, product and image, and you'll be setting a great foundation for future sales.
